    Ari Shapiro Facts

  • When he was about 8 years old, he and his family moved from Fargo, North Dakota, to Beaverton, Oregon. He did most of his schooling there.
  • In January 2001, not long after he graduated from Yale University, he started his career with NPR (National Public Radio) as an intern to NPR‘s legal affairs correspondent. Thereafter, Ari worked as an editorial assistant and an assistant editor on Morning Edition, a news program produced and distributed by NPR.
  • Eventually, he began covering the White House (the official residence and workplace of the president of the United States) for NPR in 2010. In 2014, he started working as NPR‘s international correspondent – based in London.
  • In July 2015, NPR announced that Ari would soon become one of the rotational hosts of All Things Considered, the flagship news program on NPR. He is a distant relative of Susan Stamberg (née Levitt) who had served as the co-host of All Things Considered between 1972 and 1986.
  • This made her the first woman to have held a full-time position as the anchor of a national nightly news broadcast in the United States. One of Ari’s cousins is married to one of Susan’s cousins and they affectionately call each other ‘cuz’ (short for cousin). Susan is a ‘Broadcasting Hall of Fame’ inductee as well as a ‘National Radio Hall of Fame’ inductee.
  • In 2023, the University of Portland, a private Catholic university in Portland, Oregon, conferred upon Ari a degree of Doctor of Humane Letters – an honorary degree awarded to those who have distinguished themselves through humanitarian and philanthropic contributions to society.
